by Pablo Eduardo Vargas E., Panama
As a university professor on exchange in Boston, as part of the Study of the U.S. Institutes Program for Scholars sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, I’m experiencing a learning journey that brings to mind a book I read in elementary school, The Boy and the Swan. Though I barely remember the content, its message now resonates deeply with my current academic adventure, organized by the Institute for Training and Development (ITD). Much like the boy in the book, I’m uncovering new knowledge and developing a profound love for education in this opportunity-rich environment.
Since arriving in Boston, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the most prestigious educational institutions, such as Harvard Business School and MIT, as well as the Boston Public Library. Additionally, I will have the opportunity to visit other significant sites like the US Capitol in Washington D.C. and the United Nations headquarters in New York, each representing vivid examples of how the U.S. government model organizes to provide the maximum possible freedoms to individuals. These visits broaden my understanding and expand my horizons, much like the boy in the book, who is captivated by books when, along with his friend the swan, he discovers a library and develops a new appreciation for knowledge. I have been experiencing the same for several days, finding inspiration in every corner of Boston.
During a visit to the Boston Public Library, I had a stunning and thrilling revelation when I found a statue of the boy and the swan. This experience gave me goosebumps, as seeing the statue in such a significant place made the symbolism of my exchange journey become a tangible reality. The statue embodies the values guiding the Institute for Training and Development (ITD): the relentless pursuit of sustainable development through knowledge and exploration in international extension activities. This academic exchange, inspired by these principles, not only aims to improve public policies but also seeks to inspire new generations to keep exploring and learning in their quest for a better world.
The swan, a central figure in the book and the statue, also holds significant symbolism in the Bible. Often associated with grace, purity, and transformation, the swan can represent a journey of spiritual and intellectual awakening. Just as the boy in the book experiences personal growth through his friendship with the swan, my journey in Boston has led to profound personal and professional development. The biblical symbolism of the swan reinforces the idea of transformation through knowledge, a theme that resonates deeply with my experience here.
As someone from the beautiful and peaceful country of Panama, it’s impossible not to compare my experience in Boston with my homeland. Both places share a maritime, port-focused vocation and are democratic and free. However, the wellbeing and circumstances are significantly different. While in Panama, I enjoy tropical tranquility and beauty, in Boston, the rich academic history and vibrant urban environment offer a fascinating contrast that enriches my perspective on education and development. This exchange journey has not only broadened my professional vision but has also highlighted the importance of freedom and exploration in the process of continuous learning, reminding me that true freedom allows every individual to explore their full potential and evolve toward higher levels of knowledge and development.
