Economic Empowerment

ITD’s Professional Fellows Program on Economic Empowerment is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It brings emerging leaders from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to participate in four-week fellowships with organizations engaged in different aspects of economic empowerment. Participants gain practical and professional skills that can be applied to their home communities as part of an effort to combat the root causes of irregular migration. The program culminates with a leadership conference in Washington, DC called the Professional Fellows Congress. The three-day leadership skills and networking event involves 300 Professional Fellows from around the world. Once home, fellows implement individual projects based on their U.S. fellowship experience. About six months later U.S. counterparts who have hosted international fellows then travel to one of the four countries for participant-driven reciprocal programs.
